Here are 5 things to look at before purchasing an anti-escape barrier for dogs .
Choose:
- A system that covers the required dimension.
- A collar and receiver adapted to the size of your dog.
- A waterproof and submersible anti-escape collar, if necessary .
- A wired or wireless anti-escape system.
- The quality of the cable.
How big is your land?
There are several models of anti-escape fencing, if you have a small city plot, all models may be suitable, however for larger plots you must choose the right product.
¾ of the models will be able to cover 5 to 10 acres, but if you want to cover more, your best choice will be the Sportdog SDF-100a because it can cover up to 100 acres of land.
Kits are generally sold with 500, or 1000 feet of cable, so plan on the number of cables needed to cover the desired space.
Acres | Feet |
1/3 | 500 |
1 | 1000 |
2 | 1500 |
3 | 2000 |
5 | 2500 |
All you need to do is make a junction in the cable using a marette and a gel cap to waterproof the joint.
The thing not to do: use electrical tape to make a splice in the wire.
How big is your dog?
Do you have a small dog of 5 lbs or a dog of 150 lbs?
For small dogs, choose a fence with tempered shock for small breeds and a small and light receiver, the perfect choice: PetSafe PIG00-10773 .
For dogs of 15, 20 lbs and more all models can be suitable, however for more stubborn dogs it is advisable to take an anti-escape fence with adjustable shock, because certain models only have one intensity and if the dog passes anyway you cannot increase the strength.
Do you have a swimming pool, river or lake nearby?
Do you have a Labrador, a Golden Retriever? If your dog loves swimming, it will be important to choose an anti-escape collar that is very waterproof to avoid breakage.
The best for waterproofing are the Sportdog products with Drytek technology , the collar can be submerged in 25 feet of water, so you can be sure that it will never break after a swim.
PetSafe brand products are generally also waterproof and submersible to water.
Wired or wireless anti-escape system?
Many people are interested in purchasing a wireless system because it is very simple to install, no wires to bury and can be easily transported, if you have a chalet or a campsite.
First of all, you should know that a wireless system emits a circular signal and in no case can it be changed to a square or rectangular shape. You must place the transmitter inside the house or garage, and you must place it in the center of the land if you want to cover as much as possible.
The radius is adjustable depending on the surface you need to cover.
Wireless anti-escape systems do not cover that much, around 1/2 acre to 3/4 acre, on the other hand for a city lot, it is more than sufficient and it is however possible to increase the radius, to the purchase of an additional transmitter.
So in summary, the positive points
- Very quick to install.
- Moves easily.
The negative points:
- Boundary of the land in a circular shape.
- Covers a smaller area than wired systems.
To demarcate 100% land, wired systems are much more efficient and less expensive.
Installation may seem difficult, but with good instructions it really isn't complicated, no need to hire professional installers, because anyone can do it!
Quality of wire for invisible fence
The quality of the thread is the most important thing, the stronger the thread the better.
What takes longer in installing an anti-escape fence for dogs is passing the wire all around the area, so it is better to have quality wire and to do it only once, moreover if your wire is buried it will be quite hard to find a cable break.
A cable of minimum gauge 20 is recommended, because it is made to last for several years, so you should be wary of cheap electric barriers, very often the wire is very thin and lasts a maximum of 1 year, without talk about the reliability of the system which is often very doubtful.
Installing the anti-escape fence is very easy, but the longest part is installing the cable, if you take a low-cost kit, you will have to redo the entire installation, because if the wire East burying the break will be very difficult to find and repair. Better to invest a few more dollars and you will save time and have peace of mind.
That's it, now that you know what to look for when purchasing an anti-escape system, you can start shopping.

je voulais savoir si l`épaisseur de neige peut nuire au bien fonctionnement du systhème avec fil. Est-ce que on pourrait encrer le fil sur le fond du terrain au lieu de l`enfouir ou sinon quel profondeur doit-on le mettre.
