In Quebec, people are very little or very poorly informed about electric dog collars!
First of all, almost everyone in Quebec uses the name, electric collar.
This name is not at all the right term when we want to talk about a shock collar for dogs.
The correct term is electrostatic collar.
What is an electrostatic collar?
Electrostatic, as the name suggests, is static emitted electronically.
This static stimulation is compared to a static shock received when you touch a metal object, carpet, or simply clothes that you dry without using a fabric softener.
So everyone, whether in Quebec, Canada or elsewhere, has already received static shocks.
How many of you have already been injured by this kind of shock?
I can't guess the answer, none of you.
Yes, it's shocks that make us take the leap, they surprise us, it's not so pleasant, I admit.
This is why electrostatic collars are so effective, they surprise the dog, distract their attention, they don't find it pleasant, and all that, without hurting them.
Have you ever received an electric shock?
Whether it's a shock on 110v or 220v, having experienced it, let me tell you that it's really not pleasant and having compared a 110v shock to electrostatic shocks at full power, even at maximum intensity. Electrostatics absolutely cannot be compared to electric shock.
It's really not the same feeling, the electrostatic compares a lot + has a pinch.
Is an electrostatic collar dangerous underwater?
Some people believe that training collars or anti-escape collars for dogs are dangerous underwater, is this the case?
The answer is no.
If the collars are waterproof, the goal is not necessarily to correct the dog when it is in the water, but example: if you are using a training collar and suddenly your dog decides to jump in the swimming pool, the fact that the collar is waterproof, it will not break due to water.
What happens if dog gets electrostatic when wet?
The risk of being electrocuted in water is once again linked to the term electric collar.
It's true that electricity and water really don't mix, but what about electrostatic stimulation and water?
Electrostatic collars in water will distribute the static so the intensity is greatly reduced, therefore safe for dogs.
Electrostatic collars are tools.
These are not torture tools, they are dog training tools.
Are its tools harmful?
You have to use it big damn, is a hammer a dangerous tool?
If used correctly it can do great things, the same goes for dog training tools.
On the other hand, if a person decides to use a hammer in an unintelligent way, to attack someone, it becomes very dangerous.
Are we going to ban the hammer for this type of individual?
Of course not, that would be really stupid.
All tools should be used intelligently, no matter what they were designed for.
Consulting a dog trainer would be a smart choice if you are new to this type of tool, or at least reading documentation.
Is positive reinforcement the ultimate solution?
Positive reinforcement can be used for certain things, they involve rewarding the dog when it does what is asked of it.
Some behaviors are very difficult or almost impossible to correct using positive reinforcement, or require consistent effort over a very long period of time.
The electrostatic collar gives ultra-fast results, from the first uses.
Positive reinforcement with little exaggeration leads to dog obesity.
Positive reinforcement is good in moderation, but is really not the ultimate solution to all problems.
Will shock collars hurt my dog?
The electrostatic collar does not have the intensity necessary to burn the skin.
What can cause sores are the electrodes in contact with the skin.
Friction can cause irritation if the dog wears the collar for too long.
Under no circumstances should the dog wear the collar for a period of more than 12 hours per day.
In conclusion:
- Electrostatic collars are not dangerous, as many people believe.
- Far too many people are misinformed and spreading false information.
- Positive reinforcement is not the be-all and end-all solution to correcting all behaviors.
- Electrostatic collars are excellent work tools if used wisely .
- They give quick results.
