We can offer you some practical tips to help you limit stress and keep your pets calm and out of harm's way during fireworks. It is estimated that 45% of dogs show signs of fear and anxiety at the sound of fireworks. Animals, not just dogs, have highly developed hearing. Loud explosions and whistling can cause them a lot of stress and pain. Signs that your pet is stressed or afraid include:
• Salivation and drooling
• Moaning and moaning
• Barking and howling
• Lack of appetite
• Tremors
• Requiring more attention than normal
• Scratching at the door to try to escape
• Hide in a corner or under furniture
• Dirt in the house
Many pets can suffer from anxiety and stress and may be particularly upset around fireworks. However, you can help them react better and overcome their anxiety.
• Keep your dogs and cats indoors during fireworks.
• Make sure they always have a hiding place if they want it. Prepare a shelter with a bath towel and a table for example.
• Walk your dog during the day and avoid taking him out in the evening when there may be fireworks.
• Close all doors and windows and block cat flaps. This will also reduce noise.
• Close the curtains to block lightning.
• Turn on the TV or radio (but not too loud) to reduce the noise.
• Make sure your pet is microchipped.
• Stay calm and don't show them that there is anything to panic about.
• Try not to leave your companion alone at home, consider finding someone to stay with them until you return if you will be away for a long time. Leave the TV or radio on and prepare shelter if necessary.
• Never take your dog to a fireworks show. Even if they don't show fear, crowds and noise will stress them out.
Small animals and fireworks: Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets and birds should all be treated calmly during fireworks. These animals can be easily frightened. We recommend taking the following steps to keep them calm and not stressed.
• Place their cage in a quiet indoor room, garage or shelter.
• If this is not possible, turn it towards a wall instead of the garden. • Cover the cage with a quilt or blanket to block flashes from fireworks.
