The Acana Sport and Agility food is formulated for dogs with high energy needs: sporting dogs, agility dogs, runners, working dogs, very active breeds. High in animal protein and quality fat to provide the sustained energy these dogs need. Multi-protein (chicken, turkey, hake, herring, eggs), no added grain. Made in Canada by Champion Petfoods.
🏃 For athlete dogs: protein + sustained energy
Fresh chicken (21%) and chicken meal (20%) first, chicken fat (8%) for sustained energy. No added grain. Made in Canada by Champion Petfoods.
🔥 Why does an athletic dog need more than protein?
Athletic dogs (like all athletes!) get their energy mainly from fat during sustained effort. It's the opposite of humans, who rely on carbohydrates for short, intense efforts. For a dog that runs for 1 hour, does agility, or works outdoors for several hours, quality fat (like the chicken fat in Acana Sport) is the main fuel. Protein helps rebuild muscle after exercise.
⚠️ Warning if your dog is not really active
This recipe is very energy-dense. For a moderately active or sedentary dog, it can lead to rapid weight gain. In that case, look at Acana Adult (more standard recipe) or Acana Senior / Light and Healthy (reduced calories).
Fresh chicken (21%) as the first ingredient + chicken meal (20%) to keep protein levels high.
Chicken fat is the main fuel for the athletic dog. 8% included in the recipe, in addition to the fat naturally present in meats.
Turkey meal (7%), fresh chicken giblets (4%), fresh eggs (4%), raw hake (4%), herring meal (3%), raw turkey liver (0.5%).
Fish oil (3.5%) and herring meal (3%): DHA and EPA for recovery, stressed joints, and post-exercise inflammation.
Red lentils, peas, chickpeas, green lentils, yellow peas. Plant-based carbohydrate base, with no added grain.
Fresh chicken (21%), chicken meal (20%), whole red lentils, whole peas, chicken fat (8%), turkey meal (7%), fresh chicken giblets (liver, heart) (4%), fresh eggs (4%), raw hake (4%), fish oil (3.5%), herring meal (3%), whole chickpeas, whole green lentils, whole yellow peas, pea starch, raw turkey liver (0.5%), salt, dried kelp, whole fresh pumpkin, whole fresh butternut squash, whole fresh carrots, whole fresh apples, whole fresh pears, whole fresh zucchini, dried chicory root, fresh kale, fresh spinach, fresh turnip greens, fresh beet greens, whole cranberries, whole blueberries, whole saskatoons, turmeric, milk thistle, burdock root, lavender, marshmallow root, rose hips.
Nutritional additives (per kg): Choline chloride 700 mg, zinc proteinate 112.5 mg, copper proteinate 11 mg, B-complex vitamins, vitamin A 7,500 IU, vitamin D3 1,000 IU, vitamin E 475 IU, vitamin C 0.15 mg. Zootechnical additive: Enterococcus faecium 1×10⁹ CFU.
Note: For the exact guaranteed analysis (% protein, fat, calcium, etc.), refer to the official label on the bag.
Portions depend on the dog's actual activity level. A sporting dog may eat 30 to 50% more than a standard adult dog of the same weight. Adjust according to body condition: a sporting dog should be lean but muscular. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise. Contact us to calculate portions for your dog.
It all depends on the actual activity level. If your dog gets 2h+ of intense exercise per day, yes. Otherwise, Acana Adult is probably more appropriate; otherwise there is a risk of weight gain.
Orijen Original has an even higher protein ratio (38% vs ~32–33% estimated for Acana Sport) and 85% animal ingredients. For elite dogs or competition dogs, Orijen is often preferred. For most active dogs, Acana Sport offers an excellent profile at a more accessible price.
Observation is key: body condition (you should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them), energy during exercise, recovery after exercise, coat quality. If your dog loses weight or seems tired, increase portions.
General rule: at least 2h before intense exercise and at least 1h after. Never give a large meal right before or after (risk of bloat, especially in large breeds). Small snacks during prolonged exercise can be helpful.
Acana Sport and Agility is our choice for athletic dogs whose owners want premium Canadian food. For competitive athletes or elite dogs, we can discuss together whether Orijen is more appropriate. Our team is used to advising canine athletes in the region.
