SportDOG SDF-100C Anti-Escape Fence Rechargeable System

Freedom for your dog. Peace of mind for you.

You know that knot in your stomach when you see your dog bolt toward the road. That tension every time the door opens. That feeling that he can never really enjoy the yard off-leash.

The SportDOG SDF-100C-C system fixes that. A reliable invisible boundary that keeps your dog safe at home, without a $30,000 fence.

What you get

Around 99% effectiveness once the dog is properly trained ✅ Covers up to about 1.4 acres (1,000 feet of wire included) ✅ Rechargeable collar — 1 to 2 months of battery life per charge ✅ Submersible up to 25 feet thanks to DryTek® technology ✅ 7 stimulation levels + vibration + tone ✅ Works summer and winter, even under snow and in low temperatures ✅ Compatible with any dog 8 lb (3.6 kg) and up — no upper limit

How it works — a gradual, humane system

Many owners hesitate because they worry it is "cruel." The reality: the SDF-100C-C is designed so that electrostatic stimulation is the last resort, not the first.

As your dog approaches the invisible boundary, the collar triggers a 3-step sequence:

  1. 🔔 Warning tone — The dog hears an audible signal. In most cases, that is enough.
  2. 📳 Vibration — If the dog keeps going, the collar vibrates. Often enough to make him back away.
  3. ⚡ Static stimulation — If the dog still insists, a controlled stimulation is triggered. It is not a painful shock — it feels similar to static electricity from a carpet. You can test it on your hand before using it on your dog.

7 intensity levels let you adjust precisely based on your pet's temperament and sensitivity. Most dogs are fully controlled at levels 1 or 2.

💡 Once trained, your dog understands the flags and the tone. Stimulation becomes extremely rare — often never used after the first few weeks.

Is your yard big enough?

The system includes 1,000 feet (305 m) of wire, which covers:

Perimeter shape Covered area
Square (250 × 250 ft) ~1.4 acres / 5,800 m²
Rectangle (350 × 150 ft) ~1.2 acres / 4,880 m²
Long (450 × 50 ft) ~0.5 acre / 2,100 m²

Most residential lots in Quebec have a perimeter between 300 and 600 feet — you will have more than enough wire, and you can even create exclusion zones (pool, garden, vegetable patch) with the extra.

Need more? Extra wire is available separately.

Installation — the real reality

Time required: 4 to 8 hours depending on your yard (a quiet Saturday).

Tools needed:

  • A spade or edger (if you bury the wire)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • That's it.

Two methods to choose from:

  • On the ground — The wire can stay on the surface; the grass will cover it within a few weeks. Quick solution.
  • Buried — 1 to 3 inches deep. More discreet and permanent. You can also attach it to an existing non-metal fence.

General steps:

  1. Mark out the desired perimeter
  2. Lay or bury the wire
  3. Install the warning flags (100 included)
  4. Plug the transmitter into the house or garage
  5. Set the correction zone (between 2 and 12 feet before the wire)
  6. Charge the collar and test it

💡 The wire-break alarm instantly alerts you if the cable is damaged (by a shovel, snow removal, a root).

Training — the step most people underestimate

The system only works if your dog understands where the boundaries are. The good news: most dogs grasp the concept in just 2 or 3 days. For a reliable, lasting result that holds up against distractions, allow 10 to 14 days of gradual training.

Week 1: You walk your dog on a leash around the perimeter. When he hears the tone, you guide him back toward the center of the yard and reward him. Several short sessions per day.

Week 2: You introduce distractions (another dog, squirrel, passing car) while staying close enough to step in.

After 2 weeks: Most dogs respect the boundary without any intervention. The flags can be gradually removed over another 2 to 4 weeks.

⚠️ Skipping training = a system that does not work and a stressed dog. Take the time. The result is worth it.

The investment vs the alternatives

Solution Cost Covers 1,000 ft of perimeter?
SportDOG SDF-100C-C $449.99 ✅ Yes
6 ft wood fence (installed) ~$50,000 ✅ Yes, but without the visual freedom
Chain-link fence (installed) ~$25,000 ✅ Yes, but blocks the view
Wireless system (PetSafe Stay & Play) ~$400 ❌ Covers a 3/4-acre circle, fixed shape
One vet visit after a road accident ~$2,000 and up

The SDF-100C-C is wired (so you choose the exact shape of the area) and lets you shape the perimeter any way you want — something no wireless system can do.

Quebec winter — does it hold up?

That is the question we get most often in the regions. The answer:

The wire works under snow. No signal loss, even under 60 cm. ✅ The transmitter stays indoors (house, garage, basement) — not exposed. ✅ The collar handles Quebec's extreme cold. Battery life may decrease slightly at -25°C and below, but the system remains functional. ✅ DryTek® 25 ft submersion is a bonus in spring slush.

💡 Practical tip: burying the wire protects it from damage caused by snow blowers and snowplows.

Why choose the SDF-100C-C model over another

🔋 Rechargeable collar — No more constantly buying proprietary batteries (the SDF-100A used batteries). 🌊 Submersible 25 ft (DryTek®) — If your dog loves water or heavy rain, no problem. ⚙️ Anti-linger feature — Automatically increases stimulation if your dog tries to "stand firm" in the warning zone. Prevents stubborn dogs from crossing. 🐾 Unlimited number of collars — You can add other dogs to the same system (collars sold separately). 📐 Compact collar — 6.6 × 3.3 × 3.1 cm. Suitable even for small dogs from 8 lb.

Which dogs is it for?

Ideal for:

  • Dogs 8 lb (3.6 kg) and up, all breeds, all adult ages
  • Dogs in good physical and mental health
  • Homes with defined outdoor space

Not recommended for:

  • Puppies under 6 months old (wait for maturity)
  • Fearful, anxious dogs, or dogs with significant behavioral issues
  • Dogs showing aggression (a dog that wants to bite passersby will not be stopped by a virtual boundary)
  • Owners who do not want to do the 2 weeks of training

Frequently asked questions

Is it cruel for my dog? No, when the system is used correctly. The tone → vibration → stimulation sequence is designed so the dog learns without suffering. Most well-trained dogs receive almost no stimulation after the first few weeks. If in doubt, start at level 1 and increase only if needed.

How long before my dog understands? Most dogs already understand the concept well after just 2 or 3 days. For complete, reliable training (that holds up against distractions — squirrels, passersby, other dogs), allow 10 to 14 days of supervised training. More stubborn or less receptive dogs may take 3 to 4 weeks.

What if my dog still gets out by accident? It is rare with complete training, but possible (an intense squirrel chase, for example). The anti-linger feature and the 7 stimulation levels let you adjust for more determined dogs. Once out, the dog may hesitate to come back in — which is why proper recall training matters.

Can other animals get in (cats, raccoons, deer)? Yes, the system only controls SportDOG collars. Other animals can come and go freely. If that is a problem, a real fence is the only real solution.

How long does the collar battery last? Between 1 and 2 months depending on use. A full recharge takes 2 to 3 hours.

What if the cable is damaged? The wire-break alarm alerts you immediately. You locate the break, reconnect it with a waterproof connector (2 included), and you're back up and running. Most breaks happen during snow removal (another reason to bury the wire).

Can I add a second dog? Yes, the number of compatible collars is unlimited. Additional collars are sold separately.

Warranty? Satisfaction guaranteed. If the system does not work for your situation after serious training, contact us — we will take the time to understand and find a solution with you.

Before ordering, take 2 minutes to roughly measure the perimeter of the area you want to cover. If it is more than 1,000 feet, add an extra roll of wire to your order. If it is less, you will have slack for exclusion zones (pool, garden) — an excellent use of the extra wire.
