When Petz International launched Tartar Buster® in 1997, the idea was simple: to offer dogs a bone that cleans their teeth without any industrial ingredients. No hydrolyzed corn protein, no Yellow 5 coloring, no preservatives. Just a bone.
Nearly 30 years later, the formula hasn't changed — because it works.
The patella (the kneecap) of the beef is naturally resistant. Unlike long bones, which can splinter into sharp fragments, the kneecap has a dense, rounded structure that wears down gradually. It does not contain no pith, which means less fat and a much lower risk of digestive issues such as pancreatitis.
The Tartar Buster® is then dry oven-roasted — not smoked, not fried, not overcooked. This process concentrates the flavor without adding artificial smoke, and keeps the bone firm enough to do its dental job without crumbling into pieces.
When your dog chews, its tooth scrapes the hard surface of the bone from different angles. This delicate mechanical action remove the plate before it hardens into tartar. The more regularly your dog chews, the more cumulative the effect: fresher breath, healthier gums, visibly cleaner teeth.
It is not a substitute for brushing or cleanings at the vet — it is a natural supplement that maintains daily oral hygiene.

Can my dog choke on this bone? The risk exists with any bone, but the beef kneecap is one of the safest options: dense structure, no sharp edges, wears down gradually. The golden rule: Always supervise, and remove the bone when it becomes small enough to be swallowed.
🐶 From what age can my dog have it? The Tartar Buster is designed for Adult teethIt is recommended to wait until your puppy is all their permanent teeth (~6 months and older) before inserting it.
Does it replace brushing or cleaning at the vet? No — it's a supplement. Brushing and professional cleanings remain essential. Tartar Buster helps to warn the buildup of plaque between two cleanings.
If my dog has a sensitive stomach, is it risky? Just so, Tartar Buster is often better tolerated than other bones: no marrow, little fat, a single ingredient. That's one of the reasons Canadian veterinarians have recommended it for 30 years. That said, introduce it gradually.
⏱️ How long does it last? For a medium-sized moderate chewer: 30 minutes to 1 hour per session. For a large, highly active dog: up to 2 hours. You can keep it between sessions and take it out again.
If my dog doesn't like it? As with any treat, around 25% of dogs prefer other textures. If that's the case, write to us: we'll suggest an alternative from our range (pig ears, yak cheese, antler chews). Our goal is for your dog to be happy.
