The Acana Senior food is specifically formulated for senior dogs: reduced calories to help maintain a healthy weight as metabolism slows, high-quality multi-protein to preserve muscle mass, and no added grains. Made in Canada by Champion Petfoods.
🐕 Senior profile: fewer calories, same protein quality
Reduced fat (only 1% chicken fat vs 8% in Adult) while keeping an excellent protein ratio. No added grains, multi-protein, made in Canada.
🐕 🦺 When should you switch to a senior formula?
Switching to senior food is not about a fixed age: it's more about the dog's overall condition. In general, small breeds age later (8-10 years), medium breeds around 7-8 years, and large breeds earlier (5-6 years). Signs to watch for: weight gain, stiffness, lower energy. A senior formula helps maintain weight and supports the changing needs of an aging dog.
💪 Protein for senior dogs: yes or no?
Contrary to an old belief, senior dogs benefit just as much, if not more, from a good protein intake than adult dogs. It is muscle loss (sarcopenia) that threatens aging dogs, not a "protein overload" to fear. The logic of a senior recipe is therefore to reduce calories (especially fat) while keeping quality protein. That is exactly what Acana Senior does.
Fresh chicken (19%) as the first ingredient + chicken meal (18%) to concentrate protein intake.
Turkey meal (6%), fresh chicken organs (5%), fresh eggs (4%), raw hake (4%), herring meal (3%), raw turkey liver (1%).
Fish oil (4%) and herring meal (3%): DHA and EPA are especially beneficial for senior dogs, for the heart, joints, and skin.
Red lentils, whole peas, chickpeas, green lentils, yellow peas. Plant-based carbohydrate base, with no added grains.

Yes. Acana Senior has fewer calories but keeps quality protein, exactly what is needed to preserve muscle mass in an aging dog. Avoid senior recipes that are low in protein.
Acana Senior cuts calories while keeping the multi-protein profile typical of Acana. For an adult dog (not senior) that needs to lose weight, take a look at Acana Light & Fit.
Acana Senior already contains marine omega-3s that support joints. For a dog with more pronounced joint sensitivities, you can add a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, or look at Orijen Adult Large Breed which already contains them. Contact us so we can assess it together.
Acana Senior is our recommendation for aging dogs whose owners want Canadian premium food without reaching the Orijen price point. For more pronounced joint or cognitive sensitivities, we have other options to review together.
