The Orijen Puppy food is formulated to support a puppy’s rapid growth and full development. 85% animal ingredients, 12 animal sources, 38% crude protein and 20% fat to provide all the energy needed for growth. Adjusted calcium and phosphorus (1.4% / 1.1%), DHA and EPA for cognitive and eye development.
🐶 38% protein + 20% fat + 0.35% DHA for growth
Puppy-specific profile: high protein and fat for energy, controlled calcium, generous marine DHA for the brain and eyes. Grain-free.
🧠 Why is DHA crucial for a puppy?
The DHA (marine omega-3) is a building block of the brain and retina. During the first months, a puppy’s brain grows at lightning speed, and DHA intake affects learning ability, memory and visual acuity. Orijen Puppy provides 0.35% DHA, an exceptional level for dry food.
⚡ Why so much protein and fat?
A puppy builds muscle, bones and organs very quickly. Its needs for protein and energy are 2 to 3 times higher than those of an adult. 38% protein + 20% fat is exactly what’s needed to support this growth spurt, especially for small and medium breeds with a fast metabolism.
Fresh chicken (23%), raw turkey (10%), fresh chicken organs (liver, heart) (8%), raw herring (6%), raw hake (5%), fresh eggs (5%), raw turkey liver (2%), plus dehydrated versions. The protein variety gets puppies used to several tastes and nutritional profiles from an early age.
Herring, hake, mackerel, sardines, plus pollock oil: natural sources of DHA and EPA for a puppy’s cognitive and visual development.
Sources of very high biological value protein and essential vitamins. Liver is naturally rich in vitamin A, B12, iron and zinc.
Red lentils, whole peas, green lentils, chickpeas, pinto beans, white beans. Plus pumpkin, butternut squash, zucchini, carrots, apples, pears, kale, spinach.

The amount depends on the puppy's current weight and its estimated adult weight. For puppies under 4 months, 3 to 4 meals per day are usually given, then gradually reduced to 2 meals around 6 months. For an accurate calculation, contact our team: we’ll help you determine the right amount and plan the transition to adult food. Fresh water should be available at all times.
This formula is best suited to small and medium breeds. For large breeds in growth (Labrador, German Shepherd, etc.), we recommend Orijen Puppy Large Breed, formulated for more controlled growth.
For small breeds: up to around 10-12 months. For medium breeds: up to 12-15 months. The transition to Orijen Original (or another adult food) is done over 10-14 days.
No, not for a puppy in full growth. A puppy needs 2 to 3 times more energy per pound than an adult. Fat is its main source of energy. What would be too much for an adult is exactly what a puppy needs.
For small and medium breeds, no: their growth is fast and complete in 10-12 months, and that’s normal. For large breeds, we want slower growth to protect the skeleton — that’s why we recommend the Large Breed Puppy formula instead.
Orijen Puppy is one of the best premium recipes for giving a puppy the best possible start. We use it ourselves for our breeder clients’ litters. Have a question? Our team will help you.
