The Orijen Original food The signature recipe of the Canadian brand Orijen. 85% poultry and fish ingredients, Different animal sources`, philosophy WholePrey (flesh, organs and bones as in nature) and freeze-dried coating for an irresistible raw flavour. Made in Alberta with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, it is one of the foods richest in animal protein on the market.
85% animal ingredients + WholePrey philosophy
No other mainstream recipe takes the meat/fish ratio this far. 38% crude protein, 18% fat, made in Morinville (Alberta) with fresh local ingredients. Grain-free.
What's the WholePrey concept?
In the wild, a hunting dog (or wolf) eats the whole prey : meat for protein, organs for vitamins and minerals, bones for calcium. This is the natural balance that Orijen recreates with WholePrey. The recipe therefore includes not only flesh (chicken, turkey, fish), but also organs (liver, offal) and well-proportioned bonesResult: a complete nutritional profile, without needing to add long lists of synthetic vitamins/minerals.
❄️ Why does the freeze-dried coating make all the difference?
The freeze-drying (cold vacuum drying) preserves the flavor, nutrients, and enzymes of the chicken and fish raw. This coating is applied to each kibble after cooking. The result: a much more intense taste and aroma than ordinary kibble, even for picky dogs.
Fresh chicken (25%), raw turkey (8%), fresh chicken giblets (liver, heart) (7%), whole raw herring (6%), whole raw hake (5%), fresh eggs (5%), raw turkey liver (5%), plus dehydrated chicken, turkey, mackerel, sardines, and herring (4% each). A variety of proteins found in very few recipes.
Herring, hake, mackerel, and sardines: oily fish naturally rich in DHA and EPA (marine omega-3s). Excellent for the skin, coat, joints, and cardiovascular system.
The egg is one of the highest biological value proteins for dogs. Liver is rich in vitamins (A, B12, iron, copper, zinc) and naturally provides what other recipes must add through synthetic supplements.
Red lentils, chickpeas, peas, green lentils, pinto beans, white round beans. Plus pumpkin, butternut squash, zucchini, carrots, apples, pears, kale, spinach, and beet greens — all fresh and whole.
Turmeric (anti-inflammatory), milk thistle (liver support), burdock root (purification), marshmallow root (soothes mucous membranes), rosehip fruits (natural vitamin C). A natural toolkit built into the recipe.

Orijen is highly energy-dense: portions are smaller than those of a food less rich in meat. Fresh water must be available at all times.
The cost directly reflects the composition: 85% fresh and dehydrated animal ingredients, multiple protein sources, human-grade ingredients, and made in Canada. For a more affordable budget, the range Acana (the same manufacturer) also offers recipes of very high quality with a slightly lower animal ratio. Contact us to discuss your options.
The freeze-dried coating makes Orijen especially palatable. It’s often the brand recommended for picky dogs. For a gentle transition, allow 10-14 days.
No, for a healthy adult dog. A dog is anatomically adapted to a diet rich in animal protein. The idea that "too much protein strains the kidneys" mainly concerns dogs already suffering from kidney failure. For a healthy dog, high-quality (animal) protein is ideal.
Yes, Orijen offers kibble in a size suited to small jaws. That said, we also have Small Breed Orijen specifically formulated for them.
For puppies, we generally recommend Orijen Puppy or Orijen Large Breed Puppy according to expected adult size. Puppies have specific calcium/phosphorus needs that puppy formulas address better.
Orijen is a brand we have trusted for a long time. It’s our go-to choice for owners who want food ultra-high protein, made in Canada, uncompromising. Are you hesitating between Original, Six Fish, Regional Red, or Tundra? Our team will help you find the recipe that best suits your dog.
