The Orijen Large Breed Puppy food is formulated to support the gradual, controlled growth of medium and large breed puppies. 85% animal ingredients, 38% crude protein, 16% fat (adjusted vs. the standard Puppy formula), calcium 1.3% (slightly reduced to slow bone growth), and taurine 400 mg/kg for heart support from puppyhood. Marine DHA and EPA for cognitive development.
🐕 Specifically for large-breed puppies: controlled growth + heart support
38% protein, 16% fat, calcium 1.3% (adjusted downward), taurine 400 mg/kg, DHA 0.3% and EPA 0.2%. FEDIAF-compliant for growth in all breeds, including large breed. Grain-free.
🦴 Why lower-adjusted calcium (1.3%) for a large-breed puppy?
Large-breed puppies grow for a long time (15 to 24 months) and their skeleton is under a lot of strain. Too much calcium can speed up poorly proportioned bone growth (risk of HOD, OCD, dysplasia). By adjusting calcium to 1.3% (vs. 1.4% for the standard Puppy formula), Orijen Large Breed Puppy promotes gradual, solid growth, which helps protect the joints in the long term.
❤️ Taurine from puppyhood: why is it important for a large breed?
Taurine is an amino acid that is important for heart function. Large breeds have historically been more prone to heart concerns. By including it from the puppy formula (400 mg/kg), Orijen provides support from the first months, without having to wait until adulthood.
Fresh chicken (21%), raw turkey (11%), fresh chicken offal (liver, heart) (10%), raw hake (5%), raw herring (5%), fresh eggs (5%), raw turkey liver (5%), dehydrated chicken (5%), dehydrated mackerel (5%), dehydrated sardines (4.5%), dehydrated herring (4%), dehydrated turkey (2%). Maximum variety to introduce your puppy early to multiple tastes and profiles.
Herring, hake, mackerel, sardines + pollock oil. Natural sources of DHA and EPA for cognitive and visual development.
Egg is one of the highest biological value proteins for dogs. Liver is naturally rich in vitamins A, B12, iron, and zinc.
Red lentils, green lentils, whole peas, chickpeas, pinto beans, white beans. Plus pumpkin, butternut squash, zucchini, carrots, apples, pears, kale, spinach.
Turmeric, milk thistle, burdock root, marshmallow root, rose hips. A natural toolkit built into the recipe.

For a large-breed puppy, the amount depends on their current weight and their estimated adult weight. Growth lasts longer (15 to 24 months depending on breed), and it is best not to rush weight gain: a slightly underweight large-breed puppy is better than an overweight puppy. For a precise calculation and growth monitoring, contact our team: we'll help you. Fresh water should always be available.
Reference: 451 kcal per 120 g cup to adjust portions according to the recommendations on the bag.
Orijen standard Puppy has a higher-calorie, higher-fat profile (20% fat, calcium 1.4%), perfect for small and medium breeds that grow quickly. Orijen Large Breed Puppy has an adjusted profile (16% fat, calcium 1.3%, taurine 400 mg/kg) for slower, more gradual growth, with heart support included.
As a general rule: if your puppy is expected to weigh 25 kg or more as an adult, we recommend the large-breed formula. Below that, the standard Puppy formula is suitable.
For large breeds: until 15 to 24 months depending on the breed. The transition to Orijen Adult Large Breed happens at that time, over 10 to 14 days.
That's exactly the risk this formula is meant to avoid: calcium adjusted to 1.3%, fat reduced to 16%, and quality protein for muscle mass without excess calories. Calculating portions based on target weight (not current weight) is the key.
Large breeds are more sensitive to heart concerns. By adding it from the puppy formula (400 mg/kg), Orijen provides preventive heart support from the first months.
For a large puppy, choosing the right food is critical: this is where joint health for life is decided. Orijen Large Breed Puppy is our premium recommendation for puppies that will become large dogs. Our team can help you plan portions and transitions.
