🔍 What is a limited-ingredient diet (LID) recipe?
A LID (Limited Ingredient Diet) recipe intentionally limits the number of ingredients to reduce the risk of allergies. One animal protein source, a simple plant base, no grains. It’s the recommended approach for identifying the protein causing an allergy or for feeding a dog already diagnosed as allergic to several common proteins. The Acana Simple line offers 3 options: pork, duck, or lamb.
🦆 Why duck as a mono-protein?
The duck is a uncommon protein in commercial foods, so it is rarely the cause of allergies that have already developed. It’s also a naturally fattier meat, so it’s very palatable for picky dogs. The pear accompaniment provides gentle fiber and polyphenols, especially well tolerated by dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Raw duck (17%), duck meal (17%), raw duck liver (16%), duck fat (8%). All animal proteins come from duck, except the fish oil.

An elimination diet is the most reliable method: you isolate one protein (like duck) for 8 to 12 weeks while removing everything else (even treats). If symptoms disappear, you can reintroduce other proteins one at a time to identify the culprit. To plan an elimination diet, contact our team.
Grasslands combines duck, lamb, and turkey (multi-protein): excellent for dogs without a specific allergy. Simple Duck is a LID recipe with duck as the ONLY source of animal protein (except fish oil). For a dog allergic to chicken and turkey, Simple Duck is safer.
On the contrary, it’s an advantage. Duck fat provides quality fatty acids and makes the recipe very palatable. For dogs that tend to gain weight, simply adjust portions downward.
The 5.4 kg size is the ideal mid-range option for medium-breed dogs. 1.8 kg for trying the recipe or for very small dogs. 10.8 kg for large breeds or bulk buyers.
Taurine is an essential amino acid for heart function. Mono-protein recipes can slightly reduce the diversity of amino acids naturally present, so Acana generously adds taurine to help ensure the cardiac profile stays optimal.
