SportDOG SDF-100C Rechargeable In-Ground Fence System

Freedom for your dog. Peace of mind for you.

You know that sinking feeling when you see your dog darting towards the street. That tension every time the door opens. That feeling that they can never truly enjoy the yard off-leash.

The SportDOG SDF-100C-C system fixes that. An invisible, reliable boundary that keeps your dog safe at home, without a $30,000 fence.

What you get

Approximately 99% effectiveness once the dog is properly trained ✅ Covers up to approximately 1.4 acres (1,000 feet of wire included) ✅ Rechargeable collar — 1 to 2 months battery life per charge ✅ Submersible up to 25 feet thanks to DryTek® technology ✅ 7 stimulation levels + vibration + tone ✅ Works year-round, even in snow and low temperatures ✅ Compatible with any dog 8 lb (3.6 kg) and up — no upper limit

How it works — a gradual and humane system

Many owners hesitate, fearing it might be "cruel." The reality: the SDF-100C-C is designed so that static stimulation is a last resort, not the first.

As the dog approaches the invisible boundary, the collar triggers a 3-step sequence:

  1. 🔔 Warning Tone — The dog hears an audible signal. In most cases, this is enough.
  2. 📳 Vibration — If the dog continues, the collar vibrates. Often enough to make them retreat.
  3. ⚡ Static Stimulation — If the dog persists despite everything, a controlled stimulation is triggered. It's not a painful shock — it's a sensation similar to static electricity from a carpet. You can test it on your hand before using it on your dog.

7 intensity levels allow you to adjust precisely according to your pet's temperament and sensitivity. Most dogs are perfectly controlled at levels 1 or 2.

💡 Once trained, your dog understands the flags and the tone. Stimulation becomes extremely rare — often never used after the first few weeks.

Is your yard big enough?

The system includes 1,000 feet (305 m) of wire, which covers:

Perimeter Shape Area Covered
Square (250 × 250 ft) ~1.4 acre / 5,800 m²
Rectangle (350 × 150 ft) ~1.2 acre / 4,880 m²
Long (450 × 50 ft) ~0.5 acre / 2,100 m²

Most residential lots in Quebec have a perimeter between 300 and 600 feet — you'll have plenty of wire, and you can even create exclusion zones (pool, garden, vegetable patch) with the surplus.

Need more? Additional wire is available separately.

Installation — the real reality

Time required: 4 to 8 hours depending on your property (a quiet Saturday).

Tools needed:

  • A shovel or an edger (if burying the wire)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • That's it.

Two methods to choose from:

  • On the surface — The wire can remain on the surface, the grass will cover it in a few weeks. Quick solution.
  • Buried — 1 to 3 inches deep. More discreet and permanent. You can also attach it to an existing non-metallic fence.

General steps:

  1. Trace the desired perimeter
  2. Lay or bury the wire
  3. Install warning flags (100 included)
  4. Plug the transmitter into the house or garage
  5. Adjust the correction zone (between 2 and 12 feet before the wire)
  6. Charge the collar and test

💡 Wire break alarm instantly notifies you if the cable is damaged (by a shovel, snow removal, a root).

Training — the step most people underestimate

The system only works if your dog understands where the boundaries are. The good news: most dogs grasp the concept in just 2 or 3 days. For a reliable and lasting result that holds up to distractions, allow 10 to 14 days of progressive training.

Week 1: You walk your dog on a leash around the perimeter. When they hear the tone, you bring them back to the center of the yard and reward them. Several short sessions per day.

Week 2: You introduce distractions (another dog, squirrel, passing car) while remaining close to intervene.

After 2 weeks: Most dogs respect the boundary without any intervention. Flags can be gradually removed over an additional 2 to 4 weeks.

⚠️ Skipping training = a system that doesn't work and a stressed dog. Take your time. The result is worth it.

Investment vs. alternatives

Solution Cost Covers 1,000 ft perimeter?
SportDOG SDF-100C-C $449.99 ✅ Yes
6 ft Wood Fence (installed) ~$50,000 ✅ Yes, but without visual freedom
Chain-link Fence (installed) ~$25,000 ✅ Yes, but blocks the view
Wireless System (PetSafe Stay & Play) ~$400 ❌ Covers 3/4 acre circle, fixed shape
Single vet visit after a road accident ~$2,000+

The SDF-100C-C is wired (so you choose the exact shape of the zone) and allows you to customize the perimeter as you wish — something no wireless system can do.

Quebec winter — does it hold up?

This is the question we get asked most often in the region. The answer:

The wire works under snow. No signal loss, even under 60 cm. ✅ The transmitter stays indoors (house, garage, basement) — not exposed. ✅ The collar withstands Quebec's extreme cold. Battery life may decrease slightly at -25°C and below, but the system remains functional. ✅ 25 ft DryTek® submersion is a bonus in spring slush.

💡 Practical: burying the wire protects you from damage caused by snow blowers and plows.

Why the SDF-100C-C model over others

🔋 Rechargeable collar — No more constantly buying proprietary batteries (the SDF-100A used batteries). 🌊 25 ft submersible (DryTek®) — If your dog loves water or heavy rain, no worries. ⚙️ Anti-linger function — Automatically increases stimulation if your dog tries to "hold on" in the warning zone. Prevents stubborn dogs from crossing. 🐾 Unlimited number of collars — You can add other dogs to the same system (collars sold separately). 📐 Compact collar — 6.6 × 3.3 × 3.1 cm. Suitable even for small dogs weighing 8 lb and up.

For which dogs?

Ideal for:

  • Dogs 8 lb (3.6 kg) and up, all breeds, all adult ages
  • Physically and mentally healthy dogs
  • Households with defined outdoor space

Not recommended for:

  • Puppies under 6 months (wait for maturity)
  • Fearful, anxious dogs or those with significant behavioral issues

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this cruel to my dog? No, when the system is used correctly. The tone → vibration → stimulation sequence is designed for the dog to learn without suffering. Most well-trained dogs almost never receive stimulation after the first few weeks. If in doubt, start at level 1 and only increase if necessary.

How long until my dog understands? Most dogs already grasp the concept after just 2 or 3 days. For complete and reliable training (that withstands distractions — squirrels, passersby, other dogs), allow 10 to 14 days of supervised training. More stubborn or less receptive dogs may take 3 to 4 weeks.

What if my dog still gets out by accident? This is rare with complete training, but possible (intense pursuit of a squirrel, for example). The anti-linger function and 7 stimulation levels allow adjustment for more determined dogs. Once outside, the dog may hesitate to re-enter — hence the importance of proper recall training.

Can other animals enter (cats, raccoons, deer)? Yes, the system only controls SportDOG collars. Other animals enter and exit freely. If this is a problem, a physical fence is the only true solution.

How long does the collar battery last? Between 1 and 2 months depending on usage. Full recharge takes 2 to 3 hours.

What if the wire is damaged? The wire break alarm warns you immediately. You locate the break, reconnect with a waterproof connector (2 included), and you're good to go. Most breaks occur during snow removal (another reason to bury the wire).

Can I add a second dog? Yes, the number of compatible collars is unlimited. Additional collars are sold separately.

Warranty? Satisfaction guaranteed. If the system doesn't work for your situation after serious training, contact us — we'll take the time to understand and find a solution with you.

Before ordering, take 2 minutes to estimate (visually) the perimeter of the area you want to cover. If it's more than 1,000 feet, add an extra roll of wire to your order. If it's less, you'll have extra for exclusion zones (pool, garden) — an excellent use for the surplus.
